The Playstation 3 is Sony’s newest game system. Sony touts it as being nearly 40 times faster than the Playstation 2 and even claims that it’s 3 times faster than Microsoft’s competing Xbox 360 (although Microsoft claims that isn’t true and says both are nearly the same).
The Playstation 3 is also the most expensive new game system on the market. The PS3 comes in at $499 for its 20GB version and $599 for its premium 60GB version. The Xbox 360, however can be purchased for $299 (core system) or $399 (20GB version) - $200 less than the PS3. The Nintendo Wii is even cheaper, retailing for just $250.
So when compared to its competition is the PS3 worth the money?
I’m not going to debate which one is more fun to play or which one has the best games. Each system has its fan base that will say their preferred system is the best, no matter what the price. While I understand the importance of the games, I’m not going put a value on the games, just the systems themselves.
The 60GB Playstation 3 is not your run of the mill gaming system. It comes with a 60GB hard drive, wi-fi, media card slots, USB ports, and a much ballyhooed Blu-ray drive. The new PS3 even has the ability to support multiple operating systems – making it capable of acting like a personal computer that just so happens to have a supped-up gaming engine. As far as processing power it has one main 3.2GHZ processor and seven DSPs running at 3.2GHZ. The Playstation three also supports high definition gaming with its ability to output in full 1080p resolution.
With all of the features it has, the Playstation 3 certainly beats the competition.
When you consider that a brand new Blu-ray player costs nearly $1,000 for a standalone unit, that makes the Playstation 3 look even cheaper. In fact, given that Sony is initially losing over $300 on each system it sells, you’re actually getting an incredible deal on this system. Not only are you getting a very good Blu-ray player for $400 less than anywhere else, you’re also getting a very powerful gaming system.
Even though the PS3 is the most expensive gaming system on the market by a considerable margin, it certainly packs the most value into its package. If you’re a bargain hunter then the Playstation 3 is the gaming system for you.
